How many tweets can be in an X (Twitter) thread?

Facts checked July 2026

Short answer

X does not document a maximum number of posts in a thread. The composer lets you chain a long run of posts before publishing — third-party clients report around 50 per batch — and there is no hard cap on a thread's total length either way, because you can always extend it by replying to your own last post. Each post in the thread keeps its own limit: 280 weighted characters on free accounts, up to 25,000 with Premium.

Mechanically, a thread is just a chain of replies to yourself published as a unit. X's help pages state no numeric limit; the composer's + button keeps adding posts well past any length a reader will finish, and after publishing, replying to the final post extends the thread indefinitely, which is how live-updating megathreads work.

The practical limit is attention, not the platform: reader drop-off compounds with every tweet, and most analytics reviews put the steep decline after the third or fourth post. The threads that hold on are the ones where each tweet makes one complete point and earns the next tap; padded threads bleed readers regardless of any cap.

Before publishing, it's worth knowing how many tweets your text actually needs: weighted counting (links at 23, emoji at 2) changes the math. The counter below computes it live.

Frequently asked

What's the ideal thread length?

As short as the material allows; 4-8 posts is the common sweet spot. A tight 5-tweet thread nearly always outperforms a padded 12 because drop-off compounds per tweet.

Can I add to a thread after publishing?

Yes. Reply to the last post of the thread from your own account and the reply becomes the next entry. This is also how you fix a thread you cut short.

Do threads get more reach than single posts?

Threads produce more impressions per idea because every tweet is a separate timeline entry, but engagement quality depends on completion. If most readers bail at tweet 3, a strong single post would have served the idea better.
